School History

Cunningham Elementary, known as Leroy Taylor Cunningham Elementary, was established in 1953. Cunningham was a significant figure in HISD that has served as Assistant Supe of schools, as a principal at multiple HISD schools, as a school inspector, and as a school board member. In 2012, an 84,500 square foot campus replaced the original 1953 building. The new campus features SMART boards in every classroom and increased computer access. The new building was built using leadership in energy and environmental Design (LEED) standards, which uses 35% less water and 25% less energy than non-LEED campuses.
